When you first make the decision to buy a hot tub there is a huge range of suppliers, a makes and models to select from, not to mention the various features which hot tubs can come equipped with.
The most common hot tubs also called Spas or Jacuzzis are self contained which sit above ground level. Self contained simply means all the heating, filtration and other components are contained within the unit, rather than a non-self contained which you may find at your local leisure centre. The shell itself can either be made from OAS or Acrylic. Acrylic is the most popular material as it has a high gloss finish making it easy to clean and available in many colours. The outside of the tub can be made wooden to give a natural finish.
Most modern hot tubs operate by a pump which circulates the heated water by sucking water in and jetting out via vented jets which add air to the water. Usually the air to water ratio can be adjusted. The majority of tubs will also have an inbuilt filtration unit with replaceable cartridges to help maintain water quality. This is supplemented with the addition of specialist chemicals.
• Budget – what is your budget? This will determine the type of tub you can buy.
• Size – most common sizes are 4, 5, 6 or 7 persons – consider the usage of the tub. Will it always just be used by yourselves, or will friend and family be invited round? Also consider where the tub is to be placed. This may also determine the size you can buy.
• Features required – do you need additional features such as lights, audio, dvd, air jets, number of jets etc?
• Fitting – consider that the hot tub will require electricity and water.
